BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Red Cross Society of China has sent 557 tents and 2,500 quilts valued at 788,000 yuan (113,000 U.S. dollars) to Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday afternoon.
The relief materials were allocated from the Red Cross' relief center in Chengdu, the provincial capital.
The society said it was sending a rescue team to the quake-hit areas to survey the situation.
The Sichuan branch of the Red Cross was organizing local people to move to open and safe places and joined relief work in the affected areas.
The quake, which occurred at 2:28 p.m. Monday, has killed at least 107 people and injured hundreds of others.
