Wang Yi Meets with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly
2022-09-21 22:35

On September 20, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairsof the United Kingdom (UK)  James Cleverly on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi said, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level between China and the UK. Facing the complex and severe challenges in today's world, China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, should focus on mutually beneficial cooperation and avoid conflicts and confrontations. For China-UK relations to fare well, mutual respect is the foundation, objective perception is the precondition, and proper handling of differences is the key. Hope that the new government of the UK will view China and China-UK relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, work in the same direction with China, treat each other as equals, eliminate interference and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to promote the development of China-UK relations on the right track.

Cleverly said that China, a major country with global influence, shoulders important responsibilities and plays an important role in the UN. The UK is committed to forging mutually beneficial and effective relations with China to boost respective growth and promote peace and security to benefit both peoples. The UK applauds China's great achievements in poverty alleviation. In the current period rife with challenges, the two countries should bear in mind the future of mankind, focus on addressing common challenges, and strengthen cooperation in fields such as climate change and poverty reduction. The UK is ready to maintain open dialogue and exchanges with China to create conditions for cooperation between the two sides in the next stage.

Wang Yi said, the UK had long been at the forefront of Western countries' exchanges with China. Both sides should take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to review and sum up experience and lessons in the past 50 years, and promote the sound and steady development of China-UK relations. China firmly pursues an independent foreign policy of peace, and stays committed to establishing and developing sound relations with all countries. China advocates and acts on true multilateralism, and follows a win-win strategy of opening up. China stands ready to share market opportunities with other countries to achieve common prosperity. In the spirit of mutual respect, China is willing to conduct candid dialogues with the UK to enhance mutual understanding. Both sides should safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations, and push for further development of bilateral relations. The UK should honor its one-China commitment and unequivocally oppose "Taiwan independence".

Cleverly said that the UK's stance on the Taiwan question remains unchanged.

Cleverly also briefed the UK's views on the Ukraine crisis. Wang Yi said, China's position has been consistent. Since the very beginning, we have been committed to promoting peace talks, and supported all efforts conducive to achieving peace. The pressing task now is to cease fire and end the conflict, prevent new rounds of escalation of the situation, and jointly address the adverse spillover effects of the crisis.
