
On May 14, 2021, Minister Ma Hui had a video meeting with President Michael Wood, Chairman Zoe Reed, Vice Presidents Jenny Clegg and Frances Wood, and Membership Secretary Ros Wong of the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding (SACU). Minister-Counsellor Zeng Rong was present.
Recalling SACU's positive contribution to the mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and British peoples for 56 years since its establishment, Minister Ma expressed the hope that SACU would continue promoting the people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, so as to inject more positive energy into the development of China-UK relations. He spoke of the value of knowledge of history and civilization as having a long term impact on understanding as well as of the importance of speaking positively about China.
Chairman Reed and others reaffirmed SACU's long-term commitment to enhancing understanding of China among the British public. Both the UK and China have benefited greatly from the people-to-people and cultural exchanges and economic cooperation. SACU is ready to continue to leverage the unique role and strength of its members to promote understanding and cooperation between the UK and China.
The Society for Anglo-China Understanding, established in 1965, is a non-profit and non-governmental organization aimed at promoting understanding and friendship between the British and Chinese people. It has made important contribution to China-UK relations. Its founding chairman is Joseph Needham, the famous sinologist and author of Science and Civilisation in China. The current president of SACU, Michael Wood, has made documentaries about China, including The Story of China and Du Fu: China's Greatest Poet, that have attracted widespread attention in the West.
