Ambassador Liu Xiaoming Meets with Financial Secretary of Hong Kong SAR Government Chan Mo-po
2019-11-01 02:41
On October 31, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming met at the Chinese Embassy with Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong SAR Government, who was visiting the UK.

Ambassador Liu noted that the overall situation in Hong Kong is improving. However, a group of extreme radicals are still committing violent crimes on the streets, severely damaging the law and order, and undermining economic development and people's life in Hong Kong. Some foreign politicians, holding on to the colonial mentality and applying double standards, blatantly interfered in the situation in Hong Kong and bolstered the rioters. Hong Kong affairs brook no foreign interference. As President Xi Jinping said, any attempts to divide China will be crushed and any external forces backing such attempts will be deemed by the Chinese people as pipe-dreaming.

Ambassador Liu stressed that the Central Government of China firmly supports the SAR government under the leadership of Chief Executive Carrie Lam to administer in accordance with the law, supports the SAR police to execute law enforcement, and supports the SAR judiciary to punish the criminals, so as to maintain law and order in Hong Kong. He quoted his twitter statement and said "stability enables prosperity which in turn brings better life for the people. In turmoil, society comes to a standstill or even backtracks. In the end, it is the ordinary people who will suffer most". He hoped that Hong Kong will soon "bring an end to violence and restore order" and seize the opportunity of "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" to achieve better development. In the mean time, people in Hong Kong should tell a good story of Hong Kong to showcase the real side of the city to the West, and foster a friendly international environment for the development of Hong Kong.

Secretary Chan said that there are currently more than 700 British companies in Hong Kong, and British business community follows the situation in Hong Kong closely. During his visit, he met with many politicians and business people in the UK, sending the message that Hong Kong's financial industry has maintained stability and its core competitiveness has made steady progress despite the recent difficulties. The Z/Yen Financial Centres Index listed Hong Kong as one of the top three international financial centres; Global Competitiveness Report 2019 by World Economic Forum has upgraded the ranking of Hong Kong from the 4th to the 3rd, and America's Heritage Foundation has ranked Hong Kong as the world's freest economy for 25 years in a row. Facts have proven that Hong Kong, over the past 22 years since its return to China, has made remarkable achievements in its development and enormous promotion in its international status, making "one country, two systems" a great success. Looking into the future and with the support from the Central Government of China, Hong Kong is confident and capable of overcoming the difficulties. It will continue to give play to its own strengths, actively participate in the development of the country, and make contribution to the development of the motherland and China-UK cooperation.
