On 24 June, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming had a video conversation with UK Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy and exchanged views with her on China-UK relationship and the exchanges between the political parties of the two countries.
Ambassador Liu spoke highly of the Labour Party’s long-term commitment in developing relations with China and commended the Labour Party on its historic contribution to the development of China-UK relationship. He said, China stands ready to work closely with Labour’s new leadership to strengthen dialogues and exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and trust, uphold multilateralism, push for free trade, and promote deeper China-UK cooperation in vaccine and medicine R&D, economy and trade, education, science and technology, innovation, climate change, the Belt and Road Initiative, women, and youth, so as to contribute more positive energy to the healthy and steady development of China-UK relationship. The Chinese side supports the British businesses in China to resume operation. The Ambassador also expressed his hope that the UK would provide an open, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment for the Chinese companies in the UK, including Huawei.
Nandy said, Labour attaches great importance to UK-China relations and appreciates China’s assistance in UK’s procurement of medical supplies for containing COVID-19. Labour is ready to engage in constructive exchanges and candid dialogues with the Chinese side on the basis of mutual respect, promote cooperation in trade and investment, education, medical care, science and technology in the “post-pandemic era”, and jointly safeguard multilateralism.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interests.
