Reception to mark the Traditional Chinese Medicine Week was held at British Parliament in the evening on 15th July 2008. Those present were Ambassador Fu Ying, Chairman Ben Chapman of All-Party Parliamentary China Group, Vice Chairman Lord Clement-Jones, Tony Baldry, parliamentarians of both Houses, CEO Simon Hill Heale of China Now, The Prince’s Charities Foundation, and nearly 80 guests from various circles and traditional Chinese Medicine institutions in UK.
In her speech, Ambassador Fu expressed her thanks to Chairman Chapman and All-Party Parliamentary China Group for their support to traditional Chinese Medicine Week to be held at Royal Society of Medicine, and noted that the forthcoming event would further deepen understanding of traditional Chinese medicine by the British people, promote the healthy development of traditional Chinese medicine in UK, and benefit more British people.
Ambassador Fu introduced the development of traditional Chinese medicine in China and indicated that as gems and crystallization of Chinese culture, traditional Chinese medicine has contributed greatly to the procreation, prosperity and development of the Chinese nation. As an enchanting flower of world medicine treasure house, traditional Chinese medicine has promoted the progress and development of human civilization. 39 out of 56 ethnic groups in China have their own traditional medicine, among which five ethnic groups of Han, Tibetan, Mongolian, Uygur and Dai have relatively complete theory system and consulting technique. Over the recent years, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of the traditional Chinese medicine sector by increasing investment consistently, and has made equal stress on Chinese and western medicine as future orientation in the development of medical and health undertaking.
Fu Ying shared a few success stories of traditional Chinese medicine treatment, and noted traditional Chinese medicine is not only with remarkable curative effect on many common diseases and frequently occurring diseases, but also plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of some major difficult and complicated cases and new infectious diseases. Fu Ying also mentioned the development of traditional Chinese medicine in UK and the rest of the world, as well as standardization and continuous development against the globalization trend.
Chapman indicated that All-Party Parliamentary China Group is dedicated to promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation including in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. British people are having an increasing interest in traditional Chinese medicine, and 1 out of 5 British has tried traditional Chinese medicine. He believed traditional Chinese medicine is able to make new progress in the fields of modernization, standardization and combination of Chinese and western medicine, thus able to build up a good image in UK and win wide acclaim.
House of Commons MP Madeleine Moon shared her personal story of how she formed ties with traditional Chinese medicine. Her husband once sprained his feet when doing shopping with her and couldn’t walk. They were so worried that they went to a nearby traditional Chinese medicine clinic for treatment. It was unexpected that he was able to walk after moments of acupuncture treatment, and the hurt location got better the following day. Moon believed people should adopt an open and welcome attitude to traditional Chinese medicine, and her husband’s experience is good evidence of the curative effect of traditional Chinese medicine.
The Prince’s Charities Foundation representative Ian Cambray-Smith introduced development of traditional Chinese medicine legislation in UK, and indicated Traditional Chinese Medicine Week held this year is exactly at the right time. He wished the event great success.
Picture boards were displayed at the reception venue to introduce the history, present status and future development of traditional Chinese medicine, and DVD played on rolling basis. Time-honored brand Tongrentang of a history of a hundred years displayed prepared medicine on the spot, and sent professional doctors for consultation. MPs and guests watched the pictures with great interests and consulted the doctors on the spot. The atmosphere was active and lively.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Week sponsored by China State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Embassy to UK and The Prince’s Charities Foundation (China) is part of the events of 2008 China Now in UK. In forms of samples, pictures and words, the event will give publicity to China’s health concept and traditional Chinese medicine culture, display the history of traditional Chinese medicine and its achievements, aiming at promoting cooperation and exchanges in traditional Chinese medicine between the two countries and allowing the British people and the world people to get a clearer picture of traditional Chinese medicine and use it properly. Traditional Chinese medicine specialists will host series of lectures and seminars during the event.
