On January 20, 2023, Foreign Minister Qin Gang had a phone call with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

Qin Gang said that Indonesia is a major country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and also an important partner of Belt and Road cooperation. The current relations between China and Indonesia face new development opportunities. Qin expressed his readiness to work with Retno to follow the strategic guidance of the two heads of state to constantly deepen and substantiate a China-Indonesia community with a shared future. China encourages more quality Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Indonesia, and hopes that Indonesia will provide more security guarantees and policy facilitation.

Retno said that China is an important partner of Indonesia at bilateral and multilateral levels,  and Indonesia has great expectations for bilateral relations and will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China. Indonesia attaches great importance to and will make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese projects and personnel. Chinese tourists are welcome to travel in Indonesia in the near future. Indonesia will take over the rotating presidency of ASEAN this year and be committed to promoting the development of ASEAN-China relations, and hopes to continue to gain China’s support.

Qin Gang said that China fully supports Indonesia in its work as the rotating presidency of ASEAN, and believes that Indonesia will demonstrate its leadership to achieve greater development of the building of the ASEAN community and East Asia cooperation.
