Embassy Spokesperson on the Six-monthly Report on Hong Kong Released by the UK
2023-05-26 10:25

Question: On 25 May, the British government released its 52nd Six-monthly Report on Hong Kong, claiming that China remains in an ongoing state of non-compliance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and that the National Security Law undermines the rule of law and human rights in Hong Kong. What's your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: The relevant report distorts facts and grossly interferes in China's internal affairs. We strongly deplore and firmly oppose it.

The implementation of the National Security Law and the improved electoral system has enabled Hong Kong to enter a new period when it has restored order and is set to thrive. Right now, the rule of law is upheld and steady progress is being made in economic and social development in Hong Kong. The rights and freedoms of speech, press and association enjoyed by Hong Kong residents in accordance with the law are better protected in a safer environment. These are the facts that no UK report can ever obliterate.

Hong Kong under British colonial rule had no democracy to speak of. This is well known to all. The essence of the Sino-British Joint Declaration is to ensure China resumes exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong. It does not give the UK any responsibility over the region after its return. By repeatedly citing the Joint Declaration as an excuse to make irresponsible remarks on China’s policy on Hong Kong, the UK is essentially trying to embolden anti-China, destabilising forces in an attempt to continue to make trouble for Hong Kong. This attempt will never succeed.

Hong Kong is China’s Hong Kong. The Chinese government is firm in its resolve to safeguard China’s sovereignty, safety and development interests, to fully and faithfully implement the policy of One Country, Two Systems and to oppose any foreign interference in Hong Kong-related affairs.

We once again urge the UK side to let go of its colonial mentality, respect the reality, stop interfering in Hong Kong-related affairs and China's internal affairs, and stop undermining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
