Embassy Spokesperson’s Remarks on the Wrong Comments Related to Taiwan by the G7 Foreign Ministers and the EU High Representative
2022-08-03 23:55

Question:On August 3rd, the G7 Foreign Ministers and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy issued a joint statement on Taiwan, claiming that China should avoid “escalation” of the tensions across the Taiwan Strait over the visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and  calling on China “not to unilaterally change the status quo by force in the region”. What is your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson:The Chinese side has stated its solemn position with regard to the visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to China’s Taiwan region. I want to reiterate that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, in brazen disregard of the firm opposition from the Chinese side, seriously violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, seriously infringed on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. We strongly condemn such a move.

The Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension and serious challenges. The fundamental cause of this lies in the repeated attempts from the US side and the Taiwan authorities to change the status quo. The US side has been playing the “Taiwan card” and trying to use Taiwan to contain China, hence repeatedly distorted, obscured and hollowed out the one-China principle, colluded with Taiwan authorities and connived at and supported secessionist forces seeking “Taiwan independence”. It is these moves that are attempts to “unilaterally change the status quo”. The current situation is entirely US own making, and the US side must bear full responsibility for the consequences of its wrongdoing. By patching up a handful of Western countries to discredit and mount pressure on China, the US side is confusing right and wrong and blaming the righteous for its own wrongdoing. China firmly reject this.

There is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair. It is completely lawful, legitimate and reasonable for the Chinese side to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and oppose secession. This does not brook any distortion or interference. The Chinese side is firmly resolved to uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity and will take firm and forceful measures to safeguard its core interests.

We urge the G7 and the EU to take concrete actions to strictly abide by the one-China principle, avoid being led astray by the US, stop making wrong remarks relating Taiwan, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs, and stop sending wrong signals in any form to secessionist forces seeking “Taiwan independence”.
