On 19 May 2025, Counsellor Hua Mei, wife of Ambassador Zheng Zeguang, hosted a cultural event entitled “The Beauty of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage”. Women representatives from various sectors in London were invited to enjoy a display of China’s intangible cultural heritage, learn about stories of poverty alleviation among China’s ethnic minorities, and experience the charm of cultural exchange.
In her remarks, Counsellor Hua noted the rich and diverse intangible cultural heritage in China and the great importance China places on its protection, inheritance and innovation. The handicrafts showcased at the event tell touching stories of China’s Dulong, Miao, and Mongolian ethnic minority communities who have bettered their lives with their own hands. The stories embody the important belief that no one and no ethnic group should be left behind on China’s way out of poverty. Intangible cultural heritage is a shared treasure of human culture. China will continue to use it as a medium to increase exchanges and mutual learning with the people of the UK and other countries, enhance people-to-people connectivity, and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. The guests watched with great interest a Dulong carpet weaving demonstration, listened to a Chinese expert recount how the Dulong people lifted themselves out of poverty, making “a leap of a thousand years in one single step”, enjoyed a fashion show featuring Chao embroidery and traditional Yi and Mongolian attire, and had a hands-on experience of embroidery and other crafts. The activities offered the guests a glimpse into the unique charm of China’s intangible cultural heritage and the driving force behind China’s development. Lady Butterworth, President of the Women’s Council (TWC), Her Excellency Tuot Panha, Cambodian Ambassador to the UK, and diplomatic spouses were among the invited guests at the event.
