On 8 May 2025, the Chinese Embassy in the UK held an event celebrating the 2025 International Chinese Language Day. Nearly 100 teachers and students from six schools, including Brighton College, City of London School and Calday Grange Grammar School, took part in the event. Minister Zhao Fei of the Embassy attended and addressed the event. Minister Zhao noted that Chinese is the oldest continuously used language in the world and also the most widely spoken language. Mastering Chinese enables one to explore the 5,000-year-old Chinese civilisation and better understand contemporary China. An open China welcomes students and teachers to visit, to experience Chinese culture firsthand, and to get to know a credible, lovable and respectable China and its people. He expressed hope that, through language learning, younger generations in the UK would deepen mutual understanding with their Chinese counterparts and become ambassadors of friendship promoting cultural exchanges between China and the UK. The theme of this year’s International Chinese Language Day is “Chinese Language: A Gift Across Time and Space”. Through activities in eight exhibition zones, teachers and students experienced the charm of Chinese literature, the beauty of Chinese characters, the richness of Chinese culture, and the essence of Chinese civilization. During the opening ceremony, a video about the Digital Museum of Chinese Language was screened, showcasing online Chinese language resources for young British learners.
