On July 19, 2025, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Mauritania diplomatic relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out that over the past 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritania, regardless of changes in the international landscape, the two sides have always upheld mutual respect and treated each other as equals, setting a model of mutual support and mutual benefit between developing countries. In recent years, China-Mauritania relations have experienced sound and steady development, with increasingly consolidated political mutual trust and fruitful exchanges and cooperation across various fields. Xi Jinping recalled that he met with President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani last year during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where they reached important common understandings and jointly announced the elevation of China-Mauritania relations to a strategic partnership, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations. Xi Jinping said that he attaches great importance to China-Mauritania relations and is ready to work with President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as a new starting point, carry forward the traditional friendship, deepen mutual trust and cooperation, jointly create a new future for the development of the China-Mauritania strategic partnership, and bring more benefits to the two peoples.

Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani said that over the past 60 years, Mauritania and China have forged a solid friendship, worked together closely at all levels and supported each other on international occasions. During the FOCAC Beijing Summit in September 2024, he and President Xi Jinping jointly announced the elevation of the exemplary Mauritania-China relationship to a strategic partnership. This is the most vivid illustration of the in-depth development of bilateral relations, which will benefit the friendly people of the two countries and help enhance the security, prosperity and well-being of people around the world.

On the same day, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council exchanged congratulatory messages with Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay. Li Qiang said that China is ready to join hands with Mauritania to take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to fully implement the important common understandings reached between President Xi Jinping and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, and continuously enrich the China-Mauritania strategic partnership.
