Question: Following the first round of talks between the US and Iran, the regional situation remains fragile. The US has imposed a blockade on all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas, and has reportedly seized an Iranian vessel. Iran has indicated that it will not participate in the second round of negotiations. How does China view these developments? What further proposals does China have for ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and promoting de-escalation? Embassy Spokesperson: This war should never have happened in the first place. The urgent priority now is to make every effort to prevent a resumption of hostilities and to avoid further instability that could have a greater impact on global energy security. We are concerned about the US stepping up its military deployments and forcibly intercepting vessels. We call on the parties concerned to honour the ceasefire arrangement in a responsible manner, avoid intensifying differences or heightening tensions, and create the necessary conditions for restoring normal navigation through the Strait. The current situation is at a critical juncture between war and peace. At such a moment, it is all the more important for all parties to demonstrate the utmost sincerity, remain firmly committed to the overall direction of a political settlement, sustain the momentum of the ceasefire and negotiations, and work for the early restoration of normal navigation through the Strait and the return of peace and stability to the Middle East and the Gulf. China will work in line with President Xi Jinping’s four-point proposal, continue to promote peace talks, and work with the international community to play a constructive role in this regard.
