On the afternoon of December 3, 2024, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji held talks with Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru Marcus Stephen at the Great Hall of the People.
Zhao Leji said that in January this year, Nauru made the decision to resume diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China by adhering to the one-China principle. This is a move that follows the trend of history and the times. Shortly after the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, President Xi Jinping held talks with visiting President David Ranibok Adeang and reached important common understandings on the development of China-Nauru relations. China is willing to work with Nauru to deliver on the important common understandings reached between the two heads of state, and jointly create a bright future for bilateral relations based on equality, mutual respect, win-win cooperation, openness, and inclusiveness.
Zhao Leji pointed out that the one-China principle is a universally recognized basic norm governing international relations, and also the political foundation and prerequisite for China to develop its relations with other countries. He expressed the hope and belief that Nauru will continue to abide by the one-China principle, unequivocally support China in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist activities. China will firmly support Nauru in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and development interests, and in exploring a development path suited to its national conditions. China welcomes Nauru to join the Belt and Road Initiative and is willing to further deepen bilateral practical cooperation, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen multilateral coordination and jointly promote the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
Zhao Leji stressed that China's NPC is willing to maintain the sound momentum of high-level exchanges between legislative bodies with the Parliament of Nauru and expand counterpart exchanges at various levels and in various fields to boost the development and construction of their respective countries. The two sides should improve legal documents conducive to practical cooperation between the two countries, strengthen coordination within multilateral mechanisms such as the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, and constantly enrich the connotation of exchanges and cooperation between legislatures. He welcomes parliamentarians of Nauru to participate in seminars hosted by the NPC for parliamentarians from Pacific Island countries and visit China more often.
Zhao Leji introduced China's achievements in protecting the ecological environment and promoting green development by upholding the concept that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. He said that the legislatures of the two countries can carry out exchanges on experience in legislation and supervision in the field of ecological and environmental protection, so as to contribute to the green and low-carbon development of the two countries and the joint response to climate change.
Marcus Stephen said that Nauru's correct decision to resume diplomatic relations with China is a historic event in the development of bilateral relations. He congratulated China on its great achievements in development. Nauru firmly abides by the one-China principle, and supports and actively participates in the Belt and Road cooperation and the three global initiatives. The Parliament of Nauru is willing to strengthen exchanges with China's NPC and play a legislative role in consolidating political mutual trust, promoting sustainable development and deepening people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Cai Dafeng was present at the talks.
