2024-07-27 18:42

On 25 July 2024, the Chinese Embassy in the UK held a reception celebrating the 97th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army of China. H.E. Ambassador Zheng Zeguang delivered an address at the reception. Defence Attaché Major General Feng Min presided over the event. Air Vice-Marshal Mick Smeath from the British Strategic Command delivered remarks on the occasion. Nearly 200 guests, including officials from the UK Government and Parliament, Defence Attachés and members of the diplomatic corps in the UK joined the reception.

Ambassador Zheng pointed out in his address that the PLA is the people’s military founded and led by the Communist Party of China. As a Chinese saying goes, a single spark can lead to a prairie fire. This military has started from a humble beginning and grown to today’s strength. It has fought heroically for the liberation and freedom of the Chinese people, for the security and development of the country, and made indelible contributions to world peace and stability. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Strengthening the Military, the PLA is marching towards a world-class military at a faster pace. On the new journey, it will continue to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and provide a strong guarantee for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Ambassador Zheng pointed out that the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee held last week was of epoch-making significance. China will further deepen reform comprehensively to improve institutions and mechanisms on all fronts and provide institutional support for Chinese modernisation. China’s pursuit of high-quality development and high-standard opening up will generate more opportunities for other countries, including the UK.

Ambassador Zheng emphasised that China has always stood on the side of peace and justice and on the right side of history. China is ready to work with all countries to implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilisation Initiative, and build a community with a shared future for mankind, with a view to injecting stability and positive energy into a volatile world.

Ambassador Zheng noted that China attaches great importance to its relations with the UK. China-UK cooperating together serves the interests of both countries and the world. The right approach to the bilateral relationship has always been to respect each other, strengthen engagement and cooperation, manage differences properly, and face challenges together. The Chinese side is ready to work with the new UK Government for the sound and steady development of the bilateral relations. It is hoped that the militaries of the two countries will increase dialogue and exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, and avoid misjudgment, and always be a stabilising factor in the overall China-UK relationship.

Major General Feng Min highlighted in her opening remarks that under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Strengthening the Military, the PLA has been continuously deepening the reform of national defence and the military, with the modernisation and combat capability of the military reaching new heights. The PLA is firmly committed to national sovereignty, security and development interests, has always put people first, and is always a force for peace. China, as a responsible major country, will continue to actively promote international security cooperation, work with other countries for regional security and stability, and jointly embrace peace and a bright future.

Air Vice-Marshal Mick Smeath said in his remarks that the military relationship is an important part of the China-UK overall relationship. The chiefs of the armed forces of two sides recently conducted a fruitful talk. The UK and China will enhance defence dialogue and communication, and work together to promote regional and global peace and stability.

The reception showcased the photo exhibition "For Peace". The guests warmly congratulated the PLA on its 97th anniversary, and expressed their willingness to further develop relations with China and expand exchanges and cooperation in defence and other fields.
