Ambassador Zheng Zeguang Delivers a Video Speech to the 2022 British Business Awards Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony
2022-11-09 09:43

On 2 November 2022, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang delivered a video speech to the British Business Awards Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony held in Beijing. The event was hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in China and addressed by Julian MacCormac, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in China, and Caroline Wilson DCMG, British Ambassador to China. Around 200 guests joined the event, including Chinese and British entrepreneurs, government officials and representatives from education and other sectors.

The full text of Ambassador Zheng Zeguang's speech is as follows.

Chairman Julian MacCormac,

Ambassador Caroline Wilson,

Friends from the business community,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure to attend the 2022 British Business Awards Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, I wish to extend our warmest congratulations to all the award recipients.

Despite the lingering Covid-19 pandemic and the sluggish global economy, China-UK business ties continue to make progress: in the first half of this year, two-way commodity trade was over 50 billion US dollars; by last August, two-way investment stock reached 50.4 billion US dollars. This shows the resilience and complimentarity between our two countries, and it is also a testimony to the strength and dynamism of Chinese and UK companies.

Two weeks ago, the Communist Party of China (CPC) held its 20th National Congress, a meeting with epoch-making significance. The most important achievement of the Congress is the election of the new central leadership with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, an election that reflects the common will of the entire Party and people of the whole country.

The CPC National Congress has decided to advance China’s rejuvenation through a Chinese path to modernization, and has set the targets and charted the course for China’s development in the next 5 years and beyond.

The Chinese modernisation, which will bring common prosperity to over 1.4 billion Chinese people, and features green and sustainable development, both material and cultural-ethical advancement and peaceful development, will surely create ample opportunities for the world.

China is committed to its fundamental national policy of opening to the outside world and pursues a mutually beneficial strategy of opening up. We will steadily expand institutional opening up with regard to rules, regulations, management, and standards and accelerate its transformation into a trader of quality. China’s high-quality development and high-standard opening up presents a sustained drive for global economic recovery.

China on a new journey of the new era represents stability, certainty and opportunities and will continue to inject positive energy into world development.

China welcomes more quality products from the UK and more cooperation in such areas as healthcare, green development, digital economy, financial service, and innovation. We will continue to provide facilitation to British businesses in pursuing cooperation in China, and hope that the UK will work to maintain a fair, just and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese businesses in the UK.

The China-UK relationship is now standing at an important juncture. We hope that the UK side will work with the Chinese side in the same direction, follow the principles of mutual respect, openness and inclusiveness, focus on dialogue and cooperation, and manage differences properly so as to keep the China-UK relationship on the right track.

I hope that entrepreneurs from both China and the UK will continue to work with tenacity and a pioneering spirit, champion open, innovative and shared development, and create new highlights of cooperation for mutual benefit.

To conclude, I wish this evening’s event a full success.

Thank you all.
