Ambassador Zheng Zeguang Visits China Construction Bank London Branch
2022-03-20 23:00

On 18 March, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang led a few staff of the Chinese Embassy in the UK on a study trip to the London Branch of China Construction Bank. During the visit, Ambassador Zheng and his delegation had a discussion with the Branch management team, visited the operating departments and talked to the front-line staff.

The discussion began with Yang Aimin, General Manager of CCB London Branch, introducing in detail the timeline of the Branch’s development in the UK, especially its progress in recent years in promoting green financial services, building cooperation platforms for SMEs and promoting RMB internationalization.

Ambassador Zheng fully acknowledged achievements of CCB since the  founding of its representative office in the UK in 1991 and spoke highly of CCB’s active fulfillment of social responsibility and its positive contribution to closer China-UK economic and trade cooperation and stronger mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries as it grows bigger and stronger.

Ambassador Zheng said that China is leading the world at the moment in both epidemic control and economic development. The "Two Sessions" have set the expected targets for economic and social development this year. China will maintain its strategic determination, adhere to the principle of seeking progress in a stable manner, coordinate epidemic prevention and control with economic and social development, deepen reform and expand high-level opening-up, and actively deal with various risks and challenges. The country has full confidence in steadily achieving its set development goals and inject stability and positive energy into a world full of uncertainties.

Ambassador Zheng noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the UK. Over the past 50 years, China-UK relations have weathered storms and generally kept moving forward. 2021 saw bilateral trade in goods exceed $100 billion for the first time and mutual investment buck the trend and achieve growth. Financial services account for an important part in China-UK economic and trade cooperation, with more than 40 Chinese financial institutions operating in the UK. He expressed hope that the Chinese and British financial institutions will give full play to their respective advantages and actively expand mutually beneficial cooperation in green finance, financial technology, offshore RMB business, bond issuance and other fields, so as to provide strong support for China-UK cooperation in real economy and bring more tangible benefits to the people of both countries.

When visiting the operating departments of the branch, Ambassador Zheng talked with the front-line staff and listened to their stories of  working with Chinese enterprises in the UK and promoting exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and British enterprises. He spoke highly of the Branch's continuous effort in recent years in innovation and development, attracting global talents and improving the quality of its services. He encouraged the Branch to make further efforts and continue to set the benchmark for Chinese banking institutions  overseas. Given the continued impact of Covid, he also reminded everyone to stay safe and health .

On behalf of all the staff at CCB London Branch, General Manager Yang Aimin thanked Ambassador Zheng Zeguang and the Chinese Embassy in the UK for their care, guidance and assistance, saying the branch will continue to make positive contributions to promoting China-UK financial cooperation.

Minister Bao Ling and Minister Counsellor Zeng Rong of the Chinese Embassy in the UK accompanied the Ambassador on the visit.
