Ambassador Zheng Zeguang on Ukraine Crisis
2022-03-21 12:00

On March 16th, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang had a discussion with Chinese and foreign guests while visiting an investment project by Chinese enterprise in the UK, during which he took questions from British guests regarding the Ukraine crisis.

Ambassador Zheng said that the current situation in Ukraine is worrisome, and the Chinese side is deeply grieved by the flare-up of conflict again on the European continent. China maintains that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be fully observed, and the legitimate security concerns of all countries must be taken seriously. We need to actively advocate a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. At the moment, the pressing task is to avoid the tense situation from escalating and to prevent a massive humanitarian crisis. All parties need to make efforts to facilitate dialogue for peace by jointly supporting the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and encouraging the two sides to keep up the momentum of negotiations to bring about peaceful outcomes. It is necessary to work vigorously to cool down the situation, rather than adding fuel to the fire and stimulating the escalation of the crisis.

Ambassador Zheng pointed out that China has been working on facilitating reconciliation and dialogue. Recently, President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone with the leaders of Russia, France, Germany and other countries, and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also spoke with the foreign ministers of more than a dozen countries. These efforts are aimed at promoting the  alleviation of the Ukraine crisis and encouraging all parties to solve the problem through negotiations. China has also sent three batches of humanitarian aids to Ukraine. China supports all efforts that are conducive to the peaceful resolution of the crisis and is ready to continue to play a positive role together with the international community.

In response to recent media reports that China has expressed its willingness to provide arms assistance to Russia, Ambassador Zheng replied that this is purely false information and in no way credible at all. China's principle and stance on the Ukraine issue have been open, transparent and consistent, and they must not be distorted.
