On December 15th, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang met, via video links, with Amanda Milling, the Minister of State from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK. They agreed that the important understanding between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in their recent telephone conversation pointed the way forward for the China-UK relationship, and that the two sides should follow up on the understanding, step up dialogue and communication, and expand the mutually-beneficial cooperation, so as to achieve more positive progress in the bilateral relations. Ambassador Zheng also stated China’s principled position on issues related to Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Taiwan and human rights. He emphasized that the UK side should see the facts from an objective perspective, respect China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, adhere to the one-China principle, and refrain from interfering in China’s internal affairs in any form.
