On September 8, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang met with Nigel Adams, Minister of State at UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Laying out China's position on China-UK relations, Ambassador Zheng said the two sides should earnestly implement the important understanding reached between their leaders, focus on cooperation and handle differences properly on the basis of mutual respect and equality in support of sound and steady development of bilateral relations.
The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on China-UK communication and cooperation in areas of trade, culture and education, and on important global and regional issues including climate change and Afghanistan.
Ambassador Zheng also expressed China's position on issues related to Xinjiang and Hong Kong. He stressed that China's policy on Xinjiang has been effective in promoting peace and stability, solidarity across ethnic groups and economic prosperity, receiving support from people of all ethnicity living there. Implementing the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong and improving Hong Kong's electoral system are both aimed at upholding and improving "One Country, Two Systems" and ensuring lasting stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. The UK must respect the facts and refrain from interfering in China's internal affairs in any way.
