Embassy Spokesperson on the BBC’s hyping of so-called “forced labour” in Xinjiang
2024-12-03 07:32

Question: Some media outlets including the BBC recently reported that tomato purees sold at some British supermarkets may contain so-called Xinjiang “forced labour” tomato. What is the comment of the Chinese Embassy in the UK?

Embassy Spokesperson: The allegation of so-called “forced labour” in Xinjiang’s tomato industry is totally groundless and nothing but slander.

There is no so-called “forced labour” in Xinjiang or any place of China. Governments at all levels in Xinjiang fully respect the will of workers, and protect their rights and interests in accordance with the law. Certain Western countries and anti-China forces have been relentlessly fabricating rumours to mislead the public, aiming to undermine Xinjiang's stability and containing China's development. Such attempt will never succeed.

We urge the BBC to abide by the principles of objectivity and fairness when reporting China, stop publishing and spreading irresponsible reports on China, and refrain from providing platform for hyping disinformation about Xinjiang.
