Embassy Spokesperson on the UK Foreign Secretary Meeting Son of Jimmy Lai
2024-11-12 13:36

Question: It is reported that Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with Sebastien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai the other day, and continued to call for Jimmy Lai’s release. What is your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: We firmly oppose the UK side’s wanton practice of supporting those anti-China elements bent on distabilising Hong Kong and making irresponsible remarks on the trial of a judicial case in the SAR.

Hong Kong is a society under the rule of law. It is a basic principle that laws must be followed and violations must be punished. Jimmy Lai was a plotter and instigator of the anti-China riots in Hong Kong, who blatantly colluded with external forces to endanger national security and committed numerous egregious deeds.

The Hong Kong SAR court has been impartial in trying the case and resolute in cracking down on acts and activities that endanger national security. This is completely in accordance with the law and beyond reproach.

The UK side’s public interference of a case that has entered judicial proceedings and its backing of someone who broke the law runs counter to the spirit of the rule of law and constitutes gross interference in China's internal affairs. It is completely unacceptable and will never succeed.

We solemnly demand that the UK side abandon its hypocritical double standards and political show, respect facts and the rule of law, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong-related affairs, which are China's internal affairs.
