Question: Recently, the BBC reported that there had been multiple telecom scams targeting overseas Chinese. Safeguard Defenders claimed that “secret police stations” operated by the Chinese government in other countries created a climate of fear. This is why Chinese people outside of China seem to be vulnerable to this type of crime. What is your comment? Embassy Spokesperson: The accusation by so-called Safeguard Defenders against the Chinese government was totally groundless. It was actually making up excuses for the crime of telecom scam. We deplore such act. The Chinese government has been steadfast in fighting telecom scams and actively engaged in international cooperation on the matter. We further advice overseas Chinese not to fall prey to rumors and keep alert to telecom scam in all its forms. In cases of suspicion, report to police at once. We hope the British media will abide by professional ethics and refrain from publishing baseless remarks excusing criminal activities.
