Question: On 30 May, Minister of State Anne-Marie Trevelyan of the FCDO issued a statement, making unwarranted comments on the verdict of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR on the conspiracy to commit subversion case, and calling on the Hong Kong authorities to end National Security Law prosecutions and release all individuals charged under it. What is your comment? Embassy Spokesperson: Hong Kong is a society under the rule of law. To abide by the law and bring lawbreakers to justice is a basic principle. No one should be allowed to use “democracy” as a pretext to engage in unlawful activities and escape justice. The Central Government firmly supports the law enforcement and judicial authorities in the Hong Kong SAR in carrying out their duties in accordance with the law and punishing all acts that undermine national security. We firmly oppose the UK’s interference in China’s internal affairs and its attempt to undermine Hong Kong’s rule of law. We urge the UK to stop making groundless accusations against China and stop harbouring and condoning anti-China elements seeking to disrupt Hong Kong.
