Question: A World Health Organization official said that the organization was pleased to see China adjusting its current strategies on Covid. What is your comment? Embassy Spokesperson: In the fight against Covid, the Chinese government has always given top priority to the safety and health of the people and taken the initiative to combat the epidemic with proactive measures. Meanwhile, we have been closely tracking virus mutations, constantly improving our understanding of the virus and our response policy. From the implementation of nine editions of China’s Covid protocols to the formulation of the 20 specific measures, China has effectively responded to the uncertainties of the epidemic with a stable response policy and flexible measures. China’s policy has been proved to be correct, scientific and effective in practice. We have withstood the impact of multiple rounds of the pandemic in the world and maintained the lowest infection and fatality rates among major countries in the world. Our medical and health systems have stood the test, and over 90% of the population have received full vaccination. We noted that the WHO said recently that Omicron strains are still circulating rampantly around the world and that each country has to deal with an infectious disease based on their risk assessment and the tools at their disposal. The Chinese government respects the response policies adopted by other countries according to their national realities, and in the meantime, formulates and implements its Covid policy in light of its own conditions. China will continue to improve its response measures in light of the changing circumstances, adopt a science-based and targeted approach, and effectively coordinate epidemic response and socioeconomic development.
