Question: Why is the UK official's statement on helping Taiwan "defend itself" completely wrong? Spokesperson: The statement made by the relevant UK official seriously violated the solemn promise made by the UK side 50 years ago to recognise Taiwan as a province of the People's Republic of China, and grossly interfered in China's internal affairs. We firmly oppose and strongly condemn it. At present, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities are pursuing secessionist activities for "Taiwan independence", with the backing of some individual countries such as the US. This is the biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as China's core interests. China will respond firmly and forcefully to the attempt of any country or force to play the "Taiwan card” and use the Taiwan question to contain China. We are willing to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and efforts, but reserve the option of all necessary measures. No one should underestimate the Chinese people's determination, will and ability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. A few British politicians should immediately stop manipulating Taiwan-related issues, and stop fanning the flames and sowing discord in the international arena. We urge the UK side to abide by the one-China principle, adhere to the principle of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, put the relevant issues into perspective and properly handle them, and refrain from creating new obstacles to the development of China-UK relations.
