Question: On May 12th, while answering questions at the House of Commons, an official from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK claimed that the Hong Kong authorities’ decision to target Joseph Zen and the others under the National Security Law is “unacceptable”. What is your comment? Embassy spokesperson: The above-mentioned remarks of the UK official are blatant interference in China’s internal affairs and breach of the basic norms governing international relations. The Chinese side expresses its grave concern and strong opposition. China, including Hong Kong, is under the rule of law. No one is above the law and those who violated the law, regardless of their social status or background, should be brought to justice. The normal enforcement activities of the Hong Kong police in accordance with the National Security Law are beyond reproach and brook no slandering. China has long resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong and Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. We urge the UK side to respect China’s sovereignty, respect the rule of law in Hong Kong, and stop interfering in any way in China’s internal affairs.
