Embassy Spokesperson Strongly Refutes the Wrong Comments on Hong Kong by the G7 Foreign Ministers
2022-05-11 19:46

Question: On May 9th, the G7 foreign ministers and the High Representative of the European Union issued a so-called statement which contains irresponsible remarks on the election of the Sixth-Term Chief Executive in the Hong Kong SAR, alleging that they are “deeply concerned about this steady erosion of political and civil rights and Hong Kong’s autonomy”. What is your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: The above-mentioned remarks of the G7 and the EU on the Hong Kong SAR disrespect facts, confuse right and wrong, grossly interfere in China’s internal affairs and severely violate the basic norms governing international relations. The Chinese side expresses its firm opposition and strong condemnation.

On May 8, the Sixth-Term Chief Executive election of the Hong Kong SAR was held smoothly. Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu won the election by an overwhelming margin and all sectors of the Hong Kong SAR have expressed their warm congratulations. The election was conducted in a fair, just and orderly manner in accordance with laws and regulations, and the result reflects the common aspiration of the people. This fully demonstrates that the new electoral system is democratic, advanced, and in keeping with the principle of One Country, Two Systems as well as the realities of the Hong Kong SAR. It embodies the mainstream public opinion and strong consensus of all sectors in the Hong Kong SAR for solidarity. This year marks the 25th anniversary of China’s resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong. We firmly believe that, at this new starting point, under the leadership of the new administration, the Hong Kong SAR will achieve new success.

It must be emphasized once again that Hong Kong is part of China and Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. China governs the Hong Kong SAR in accordance with the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of the SAR, not the Sino-British Joint Declaration. China’s internal affairs brook no interference by any foreign force. We urge the G7 and the EU to abide by the basic norms governing international relations, stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs in any form and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs.
