Question: Recently, the BBC aired an interview with a member of Taiwan authorities, during which he said that the one-China principle does not recognise Taiwan as part of China and propagated that “democratic community should prevent China and other authoritarian countries from copying the model of Russia”. What is your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: BBC interview is used as a platform to help a member of the Taiwan authorities to spread “Taiwan independence” narrative. We firmly reject and strongly condemn this.

The one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. We urge the BBC to abide by the ethics of journalism, respect the basic norms of international relations, stop providing platform for rumour-mongering by the Taiwan authorities, and stop spreading anti-China remarks.

We want to make it clear to the personnel of Taiwan authorities that the only way forward for Taiwan is to return to the motherland and reunite with the mainland. Relying on foreign forces and seeking “Taiwan independence” is doomed to fail. No one who forgets his own origins and split his motherland will come to good end. The reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is the common aspiration of the people and an irresistible trend. It is a historical trend, no one can stop.
