Minister Counsellor Wang Qi Attends virtual IP Week Conference
2021-03-01 14:27

On February 23, Minister Counsellor Wang Qi of the Chinese Embassy in the UK attended the International Petroleum (IP) Week Conference online and spoke in the session of “The governments’ response to the climate emergency: their actions and position”. Around 1000 guests joined the event, including Dr. Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, and representatives from governments, business and academia sectors of many countries.

Minister Counsellor Wang stated that China attaches great importance to tackling climate change. At the high-level meeting to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations last September, President Xi Jinping announced that China will scale up its nationally determined contributions, adopt even more forceful policies and measures, and strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. At the Climate Ambition Summit last December, President Xi announced further commitment that China will lower its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by over 65 percent from the 2005 level. These commitments fully highlight China’s determination to shoulder its responsibility in tackling climate change. China will apply the new vision of development to promote green development to a new level.

Wang noted that as China and the UK will host COP15 and COP26 respectively this year, closer communication and coordination on these two conferences are necessary to contribute to global biodiversity protection and global governance on climate change.

Wilkinson and other participants highly praised China’s mid-term and long-term goals and visions for addressing climate change and spoke highly of China’s important achievements in this regard, saying that the international community should make joint efforts to address climate change and promote global sustainable development.
