Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang Attends the Cheque Donation Ceremony of the China-UK Charity Initiative
2020-06-19 22:37

On June 18, 2020, Head of the Foreign Ministry's Poverty Alleviation Leading Group and Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang attended the cheque donation ceremony of China-UK Charity Initiative for Yunnan poverty alleviation project. The event, held via videolink and co-organized by the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK and the City of London, raised and donated 27,814 pounds (250,000 RMB) to Jinping County of Yunnan Province, a poverty-stricken county paired up with the Chinese Foreign Ministry, with an aim to help build a medical clinic in the county. Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming, Lord Mayor of London Alderman William Russell, Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK Fang Wenjian, and Secretary of Jinping County Party Committee Jin Hongjiang attended and addressed the event.

Qin Gang said, eradicating poverty is a common challenge faced by mankind. China's poverty reduction programme and achievements have been widely recognized by the international community. China's poverty alleviation cause also needs the care and support of caring businesses and people around the world, including those in the UK. Jinping and Malipo were officially taken off the poverty list, but relative poverty will still exist for a long time. The Foreign Ministry will fulfill its duty, provide assistance as always and make joint efforts with the people of the two counties to consolidate the achievements in poverty alleviation, realize common prosperity and build beautiful homes. As important members of the international community, China and the UK share important responsibilities to promote world sustainable development. It is hoped that the two countries will strengthen cooperation.

Secretary Jin Hongjiang thanked the Foreign Ministry, the Chinese Embassy in the UK, the City of London and the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK for their care and help to Jinping. He said that the county would make good use of the donation to bring tangible benefits to local villagers, and invited the China-UK Charity Initiative to visit Jinping when available.
